As this chaotic year comes to a close, designers are embracing the possibility of a blank slate, a fresh start: white is trending across the runways and fashion presentations of Spring 2021. While its antiquated and patriarchal role of embodying virginal purity is (thankfully) no longer relevant, white does still bear some traditional sense of newness, simplicity, and optimism. The trend feels emblematic of a reevaluation of what is essential and what can be let go. Both containing and negating all other colors at once, white feels suggestive of freshness, abstraction, and possibility.
Its simplicity offers an interesting balance of freedom and rigidity for creators to work with. We’ve seen many exciting ways that designers can explore material in order to bring new dimensions to the pure shade. Combining structural layers of white can reveal unexpected depths. Clean-lined minimalist compositions imbue figures with an otherworldly aspect. Making use of different fabrics, such as sheer, knit, or eyelet gives designers opportunities to create white garments that have an intimate and revealing relationship with the body.
