Review of Wooyoungmi Spring 2021 Ad Campaign by Photographer Casper Sejersen with models Evelyn Nagy, Georges Labbat, and Mamadou Lo
Wooyoungmi dances into Spring 2021 with a rhythmic and romantic new campaign featuring photography by Casper Sejersen.
The campaign repurposes imagery from the label’s Paris runway show, which drew inspiration from the work of dancer and choreographer Pina Bausch. That show was strong enough visually that smart art direction here means the new campaign does not feel stale or lookbook-y, but still feels energetic and striking.
Though ostensibly a menswear brand, the show starred both men and women, and Woo Youngmi has said that she often designs her pieces with a couple who share clothes in mind. This sense of practical romanticism can be seen in the campaign imagery, which offers both an expressive sense of movement and a well-structured simplicity. Sejersen does impressive work to maintain a sense of rhythm and motion within a still image.
Woo is renowned for her sophisticated and slightly oversized tailoring, which she thoughtfully approaches with freedom of movement and expression in mind. As the body’s way of expressing its love of freedom, dance is a poetic and practical way to capture this process in a bold visual statement.
