Moschino

Fall 2020 Ad Campaign

Aaron Philip makes an incredible impact in the Fall 2020 campaign from Moschino. It’s the first major campaign for the up-and-coming model and activist, who has already made history as the first Black, trans, and physically disabled person to be signed by a major agency – and it’s a huge moment for the representation of disabled people in fashion.

Photography duo Luigi & Iango capture Philip in simple black-and-white studio portraiture. The styling combines classically Moschino pieces like an oversized hoodie and leather jacket with ornate baroque elements, accentuating Philip’s imposing, queenly attitude. She seems like a modern-day Marie Antoinette, and the irony of this connection is not lost on us. The inclusive intentions of this campaign are about as far as possible from those of a tyrannical aristocrat. The campaign reclaims history as it makes history, helping us move into a new era where all identities are sovereign.

Aaron Philip posted about the photographs on Instagram; her humble and inspiring message encapsulates the monumental importance of this moment, and all that it represents.

i’ve been too shell shocked to try & say anything prolific, but this is SUCH A BIG DEAL BEING A PHYSICALLY DISABLED PERSON/MODEL IN A CAMPAIGN LIKE THIS 😭❤️ i really am so so very happy & i hope the community is too! this is the start! more REAL space for us!

Philip’s chair is neither hidden nor dressed up. This feels like an important choice, as honest representation is what is needed to move towards the normalization and inclusion of marginalized identities in fashion and culture at large.

Moschino is doing incredibly important work by providing a wide platform and a real space for Aaron Philip, while also getting out of her way and allowing her to shine. She is beautiful, and the intersectionality she embodies gives her the chance to have a powerful voice in the ongoing fight for the normalization and inclusion of disabled people, as well as Black and trans people. She is using this voice incredibly well, and we are genuinely inspired to watch her work. We can’t wait to see what’s next.
