Review of Tory Burch Miller Sandal Spring 2022 Ad Campaign by Creative Director Charlotte Wales with Stylist Mel Ottenberg and Talent Sydney Sweeney
Sydney Sweeney hits the road in a new campaign for Tory Burch. Directed by Charlotte Wales, the Summer 2022 campaign highlights the brand’s classic Miller sandal as Sweeney takes it for a desert road trip.
The film follows Sweeney as, sunglasses on and hair blowing in the breeze, she drives an old-school convertible down a dusty and sunbaked desert highway, only to run into engine trouble. But she’s come prepared, and, equipped with a Tory Burch utility that’s also full of backup sandals, she gets things back up and running via an excellently edited repair montage – which is also a good excuse to show off some sexy and summery TB fits – appropriately set to the tune of Missing Persons’ 1982 classic “Walking in L.A.”
Combining stills from the film with shots of Sweeney lounging in the backseat as she takes a break from her maintenance job, the accompanying photographs fit the mood of the film perfectly.
Though glamorized, the storyline here isn’t entirely fictional, as the IRL Sweeney has recently finished restoring her own ‘69 Ford Bronco, which she called her “pride and joy” via an Instagram post in April.
While, like many of her Euphoria costars, Sweeney has been a much sought-after celebrity casting choice in fashion campaigns recently, the campaign goes further and matches the recognizable face with a smart narrative that also plays to her talents and acting chops. Empowering, playful, and unabashedly hot – in both senses of the word – the campaign is a high-octane rush of summer fun.
