Review of Louis Vuitton x Yayoi Kusama Spring 2023 Ad Campaign by Creative Director Ferdinando Verderi with Photographer Steven Meisel with Talent Lea Seydoux, Cate Blanchett, Justin Timberlake, Naomi Osaka, Hoyeon, and Zhou Dongyu
Louis Vuitton’s collaboration with contemporary art icon Yayoi Kusama carries joyfully on with a new campaign celebrating the project’s second drop. As with the campaign’s debut chapter, the imagery was shot by photographer Steven Meisel with creative direction from Ferdinando Verderi.
While the first part of the campaign centered on Kusama’s most recognizable motif – polka dots – chapter two expands into more playful and eclectic territory.
Acting as canvases, brand ambassadors and friends of the house – including Lea Seydoux, Cate Blanchett, Justin Timberlake, Naomi Osaka, Hoyeon Jung, and Zhou Dongyu – pose for a series of playful portraits embellished with colorful, expressionistic statements inspired by some of Kusama’s distinctive motifs. Radiant pumpkins, colorful faces, flowers, and infinity dots and nets appear on the brand’s iconic Capucines and Monogram accessories, and are reprised in vibrant beauty looks by makeup artist Pat McGrath.
The bags are fun, but it’s where the art pops off of the pieces and out into the world and the bodies of the stars that form its most fun moments, capturing all the joy and imagination behind these two iconic creative forces.
