Jil Sander+

Spring 2023 Ad Campaign

Review of Jil Sander+ Spring 2023 Ad Campaign by Creative Directors Lucie & Luke Meier with Photographer Nikki McClarron

Jil Sander+ continues its poetic exploration of the great outdoors with a new campaign for Spring 2023 by photographer Nikki McClarron.

Captured at Sierra de las Nieves National Park in Andalusia in southern Spain, McClarron’s imagery suggests a serene harmony between the natural and the man-made. Taking in the gorgeous colors of the alpine oasis – which are first and foremost green – she creates a delicate visual rhythm between the minimal yet intentional design detailing of the collection and the outdoor world from which it draws its inspiration: a hand clasps a flower; a wool scarf echoes the fluffy crown of a dandelion.

(One complaint: the noticeably ultra-skinny models, which, aside from reinforcing fashion’s harmful body-image projections, don’t exemplify the bodily strength and idea of living in harmony with nature – including one’s own – that the campaign otherwise exemplifies so nicely.)

Nikki McClarron is a frequent collaborator with creative directors Lucie and Luke Meier when it comes to capturing their Jil Sander+ campaigns, and it’s easy to see why. The photographer has a gift for capturing the delicate power of nature and the heightened sensitivity that comes from allowing oneself to be a part of it: a talent that fits perfectly with the spirit of the outdoors-focused line.
