Review of SF1OG Spring 2024 Fashion Show
Berlin is DIY
By Dao Tran
Berlin is DIY. It’s a cool fit at an event that turns out, the person made it themselves. The new, independent brands have a different way of operating here, partly because of the fiscal vicissitudes of starting a brand, but also because they are the new gen and have a different approach to life and fashion and business. Almost without fail, everyone has sustainability and responsibility on their mind, as the starting point and end goal, not the exception that has to be thought of extra or integrated in hindsight. The advantage of starting out now is doing it right from the start, not having to overhaul or retrofit an existing system because of new ways of thinking. With limited resources informing responsible ideology, an obvious MO (modus operandi) would be to run an on-demand service, with pieces tailor made to avoid waste. Another gimme is working with deadstock or transforming pre-existing pieces into contemporary creations.
“At SF1OG, we create unique one-off pieces as well as small serial productions which can be worn by any gender for any occasion. The materials we use are sustainable, which means they are either recycled or recyclable.” Like Haderlump, they also pledge to help repair any of their pieces.
We’ve been crushing on SF1OG, so happy to write about it this season since they have delivered another exciting collection. They do a great job of marrying the old craft and materials with an unmistakably modern sensibility and future vision. The same rule of thumb applies for period as for folksy: You can do period if it doesn’t look period, costumey, or too on the nose. [Ahem, Rianna + Nina].
In the simultaneity of the internet, a more or less general aesthetic for the decade no longer exists, but there’s something unmistakably future facing and modern in their iterations of vintage pieces and patterns. Maybe what is very now is the mashup of old and new, the interest of the young to reference things of the past, but make it theirs.”
Though it just begs the question of how scalable it is, because that clearly is part of the value – each piece is individually addressed and they invite you to participate in the process. As with Lucas Meyer-Leclère or Haderlump, it is a deliberate, slow fashion way to produce and consume: to take agency in the creation and eagerly anticipate the outcome.
This patchwork jacket is another wonderful example of upcycling done right.”
This sci-fi top is the promise of good tailoring, and the materials for these pants are eye-catching.
The belt is more remarkable styled like this. And these bags make me think of Coperni, in a good way. But please promise to stop doing the Balenciaga raised shoulder .
SF1OG is very creative and we want to see them succeed. They have what it takes in terms of vision and product. This is a brand we’re keeping an eye on.
