Design Collaboration Features Off-Grid Mountain Shelter and Coordinated Outerwear
Rick Owens has teamed up with Moncler to introduce a unique design project: a demountable mountain refuge inspired by the French Alps and architectural icons. The creation, developed in collaboration with Hugh Broughton Architects, is designed for off-grid resilience and pays homage to Owens’ wife, Michele Lamy, and her French heritage.
Owens describes the refuge as having a “stainless steel monocoque shell, composed of 20 precision-engineered, thermally insulated panels.” The structure features adjustable stainless steel legs to stabilize it on rugged terrains, and an airlock entry system to protect against harsh weather. Energy autonomy is a major focus, with integrated photovoltaic roof panels, supplementary ground-based solar arrays, and a wind turbine, all feeding into a battery array for reliable power storage.
The sustainable systems extend to water and waste management, featuring snowmelt collection, greywater reclamation, and a removable waste storage tank. Owens draws inspiration from artist Joseph Beuys, incorporating Moncler duvet nylon and felted wool into the interior, where a log-burning stove provides warmth alongside supplementary electric heaters.
The accompanying clothing line mirrors this rugged aesthetic. Owens describes it as “soft organic cotton long johns layered under duvet bodysuits that zip into sleeping cocoons for hibernating,” combining practicality with his signature style.
This Moncler x Rick Owens collaboration underscores an innovative approach to outdoor fashion, fusing functionality with Owens’ avant-garde vision of remote, self-sustaining living.
