Piotrek Panszczyk, the co-founder and creative director of Area is leaving the company after a successful collaboration of 10 years with the other co-founder, Beckett Fogg.
The news about Panszczyk’s exit was confirmed in a statement from the co-founders which said, “We are incredibly proud of all we have accomplished together over the past 10 years, and for Piotrek’s vision and dedication that have shaped the brand over these years.” It remains unclear what future plans Panszczyk has. The brand did not provide more information about his departure or immediate future.
The brand was recently highlighted at the Grammy awards last Sunday when singer Janelle Monáe chose to wear an outfit from the brand. Monáe wore a deep navy power suit by Area, showcasing her unique avant-garde style. Area has been a popular choice for other high-profile fans, including accomplished rapper Cardi B.
Panszczyk has been known for bringing an unparalleled level of creativity to the brand. One of his designs included a daring black gown adorned with black embroidered bugle bead hands, images of photocopied hands. He was quoted explaining the depth of his design process thus,
“Hands, at the root of creation, symbolize the artistry and craftsmanship that define our work, embodying the intricate processes and personal touch behind each design.”
Panszczyk, a native of Poland and raised in Holland, first met Beckett while studying at Parsons School of Design for master’s degrees in fashion design and society. Following stints at Calvin Klein Collection for Beckett and Chloe for Panszczyk, the duo established Area in downtown New York. The brand gained global recognition and was stocked in many top-tier stores. The founders have always focussed on exploring the evolution of beauty and femininity across different times and cultures through their designs.
