Under Semple’s leadership, the platform may play a key role in how luxury evolves for a resale generation.
Peter Semple has officially stepped into the role of permanent CEO at Depop, after serving as interim leader for the past three months. His appointment feels like a natural fit: he has been with Depop since 2019, working mostly in marketing and branding roles before taking on the top job in May. Prior to that, he spent seven years at Google’s Creative Lab, bringing strong brand strategy experience to a company built around community and culture.
But what makes this leadership change noteworthy is what it signals for Depop’s future. The platform has become an essential for younger consumers who are discovering luxury through resale. For many young shoppers, vintage luxury pieces found on Depop and similar platforms are the gateway to luxury style. They often combine these items with thrifted or upcycled clothing, creating looks that feel personal and sustainable. This approach to fashion is not just changing how people shop, but what they value in the clothes they wear.
With Semple at the helm, Depop is well positioned to strengthen its role at the center of this cultural shift. He has spoken about his commitment to accelerating Depop’s mission to make fashion circular—extending the life of clothing and reducing waste. It is a direction that resonates with where many luxury brands are headed as they grapple with questions of sustainability, relevance, and long-term value.
Josh Silverman, the CEO of Depop’s parent company Etsy, emphasized Semple’s understanding of Depop’s community and culture, and expressed confidence in him being the right leader to guide the company’s next chapter.
Financially, Depop continues to grow. It reported 35 million registered users in 2023, up from 30 million the previous year, and revenue rose by 31% to £71.3 million. While the company still operates at a loss, the narrowing gap suggests some progress. Its key markets include the US, UK, and Australia, where a majority of active sellers also purchase items, highlighting the engaged nature of the community.
What’s clear is that under Semple’s leadership, Depop isn’t just selling clothes, it is helping to redefine what luxury looks and feels like for a generation that values sustainability, individuality, and circularity at its core.
