Review of Theory ‘Made by NYC’ Fall 2025 Ad Campaign by Photographer Joshua Woods with talent Britt Lower & Calvin Royal III

Theory continues its minimalist evolution with the Fall 2025 campaign, bringing together two powerful performers: Britt Lower, the Emmy-nominated actress known for her psychologically rich performance in Severance, and Calvin Royal III, Principal Dancer with American Ballet Theatre. Photographed by Joshua Woods and styled by Jasmine Hassett, the campaign relies on a lookbook-like format—but one elevated by the emotional precision and physical storytelling of its talent.
Lower and Royal aren’t just faces—they’re full-body narrators. Britt brings the kind of interior complexity that reads even in a single glance; Calvin’s fluid control makes stillness feel like suspended motion. It’s a smart move on Theory’s part: cast two people who understand narrative through movement, and suddenly a coat draped across a chair or a wool blazer mid-step takes on meaning.
There are fleeting moments of spontaneity—the red socks on Britt, Calvin’s sleeves caught in a mid-air twist—that offer glimpses into a lived-in wardrobe. And that’s the underlying promise of Theory: clean, modern tailoring that works in real life, for real people with demanding lives.
But for a brand that built its name on outfitting New York’s power class—those who move deftly between meetings, subways, gallery openings, and weekend escapes—this campaign feels oddly detached from that urban rhythm. The press notes nod to the city as an inspiration, yet only two outdoor images appear, and even those pull back from any real sense of place. Theory has long been a wardrobe of confidence for those navigating New York with ambition and autonomy. This campaign doesn’t fully channel that energy—it’s more internal monologue than city symphony.

That said, the campaign’s restraint is also its strength. In a season of visual noise, there’s something compelling about Theory’s refusal to oversell. The brand is consistent, confident, and well-composed—and this campaign reflects that. Still, one can’t help but wonder: what would it look like if Theory invited a little more tension into the frame? Not chaos, but contrast. More evidence of the city it claims as muse. The grit behind the polish. The movement behind the calm.
With Britt and Calvin leading the way, the foundation is already solid. If future campaigns embrace a bolder sense of story—rooted in the place and pace Theory was born to dress—they might not just reflect the city’s power players. They could inspire the next generation of them.
