British Fashion Council Initiates Diversity Census

BFC collaborates with The Outsiders Perspective and the (Fashion) Minority Report to evaluate diversity and inclusion in the UK fashion sector

The British Fashion Council (BFC), in partnership with The Outsiders Perspective and the (Fashion) Minority Report, has announced the launch of a detailed review focused on diversity, equity, and inclusion within the UK fashion industry. This joint initiative emphasizes the necessity for collaborative efforts to further these values.

Termed ‘The Fashion DEI Census’, this survey aims to gauge the demographic representation in the UK fashion domain. The consortium has drawn attention to the current absence of comprehensive data, asserting that without accurate information, it becomes challenging to gauge and consequently improve upon the industry’s diversity, equity, and inclusion (D, E & I) practices.

Commenting on the development, the BFC stated, “Gaining insight into the key demographics of the UK fashion industry is both critical and timely. This audit, a first of its kind, paves the way to assess the industry’s collective stride towards ensuring equitable representation. Furthermore, the findings will shed light on how well the industry mirrors the diverse global communities it seeks to engage.”

Caroline Rush

Caroline Rush, the CEO of BFC, observed that recent years have accentuated the need to redress disparities across various occupational tiers within the industry. While many institutions have indeed embarked on introspective journeys, the lack of data remains a pressing concern.

The modus operandi for this audit encompasses an anonymous, self-declaration survey, crafted to capture a comprehensive demographic snapshot spanning all job roles, functions, and seniority levels within the UK fashion arena. Participants will be prompted to answer a concise set of queries, which will not require them to disclose specifics about their employer or any personal details. The primary objective is to analyze the industry on the whole, rather than comparing individual organizations.

The insights drawn from this census will contribute to a more extensive report slated for release later in the year. As outlined by the three organizations spearheading this initiative, the eventual goal is to formulate a benchmark guide that will aid in ensuring that ensuing advancements in the sector are both tangible and quantifiable.
