Review of Chanel Fall 2024 Ad Campaign by Director Luca Guadagnino with models Margot Robbie and Jacob Elordi
The next era of Chanel’s iconic Nº5 begins as Margot Robbie steps into her new role as the face of the fragrance. The actress stars alongside Jacob Elordi in the short film directed by Luca Guadagnino.
Robbie was first announced as the next face of Nº5 last month, when she reflected on the impressive lineage of women who’ve been associated with the fragrance over the years,” continuing, I am very honored to be joining that long list of incredible talents.”
Guadagnino’s short film begins as a familiar love story, but develops into a surprising moment of missed connection – or a meeting with fate. The two characters set a time to meet, and each sets off on their own part of the journey – Elordi on his motorbike, and Robbie driving her convertible in a custom red tweed two-piece (but before, of course, putting on her Nº5). Set to the gentle electronics of Daft Punk’s “Veridis Quo,” sweeping shots of coastline trace their journey, only for them to pass each other by and discover a moment of miscommunication. But it works out for the best, and as Robbie emerges into sunlight from a serene blue ocean in the film’s closing moments, she realizes it was the journey itself she wanted, that she was heading towards a rendezvous with herself.
Margot Robbie has been a brand ambassador for Chanel since 2018, and it’s exciting to see her role within the brand (which, among many other projects, included special collaborations for her huge Barbie movie) continue to grow. While this first full campaign doesn’t throw any surprises our way, it does fully realize the iconic character of Nº5 – an independent, thoughtful, and confidently beautiful woman – through another new chapter. We’re looking forward to seeing how this new era develops.
