Claude Montana, the French fashion icon renowned for defining power-dressing in the 1980s with his bold silhouettes and striking designs, passed away at the age of 76, as confirmed by the Fédération de la Haute Couture et de la Mode. News of his passing was first reported by the French news agency AFP.
Montana, often dubbed the “King of the Shoulder Pad” for his exaggerated silhouettes, was celebrated not only for his razor-sharp tailoring but also for his mastery of leather and vibrant color palettes. His visionary creations left an indelible mark on the fashion industry, influencing a generation of designers, and in particular helping to define the daring new visions of the 80s.
Born Claude Montamat in Paris to a German mother and a Catalan father, Montana’s journey to fashion stardom began with humble origins. After initial struggles, he launched his own label in 1979, captivating the fashion world with his audacious designs and theatrical runway shows.
Montana, alongside Thierry Mugler and Jean Paul Gaultier, represented the avant-garde of Paris fashion in his prime. He also took the reins at Lanvin couture from 1990 to 1992, leaving an undeniable imprint on the prestigious fashion house.
Despite his successes, Montana faced challenges, including financial difficulties and personal tragedies. Jacqueline Montana, his loyal sister and assistant, noted his sensitive nature and the lack of support he received during trying times.
While Montana’s career saw highs, it also encountered lows, including bankruptcies and personal losses. His marriage to Wallis Franken, his muse and model, ended tragically with her death in 1996. Montana himself faced health issues, further complicating his later years.
