Daveed Baptiste Receives the 2025 Empowered Vision Award

The CFDA and the Andréa W. and Kenneth C. Frazier Family Foundation honor the designer’s creative and cultural impact in New York

Last night in New York City, Daveed Baptiste was awarded the 2025 Empowered Vision Award by the Council of Fashion Designers of America and the Andréa W. and Kenneth C. Frazier Family Foundation. The announcement was made during an intimate cocktail reception at the W Hotel Union Square, where the fashion and design community gathered to celebrate a mission rooted in amplifying Black creative leadership. Artistic Director and Cultural Advocate Edward Buchanan and supermodel Imaan Hammam presented the honor, underscoring the award’s emphasis on vision, authorship, and long-term industry impact.

The Empowered Vision Award supports emerging Black designers through a $100,000 financial grant paired with a year-long mentorship program valued at an additional $100,000. Beyond recognition, the initiative offers strategic guidance across business development, production, and market positioning—resources designed to help designers build enduring, globally relevant brands.

The evening drew an influential mix of designers, artists, and cultural figures, including Rachel Scott, Kim Shui, Prabal Gurung, Brandon Blackwood, Bach Mai, Bernard James, Kilo Kish, and Quil Lemons, among others. Their presence reinforced the award’s broader commitment to equity and sustainability within fashion, positioning the event not only as a celebration of Baptiste’s work, but as a collective affirmation of the industry’s responsibility to invest in diverse creative futures.
