Review of Derrick ‘Intermission’ 2025 Ad Campaign by Creative Director Luke Derrick, Director Dylan Hayes, and Photographer Mikey Massey with models Robert Suthers, Nick Offord, and Finn Collins
Derrick explores the shifting pace of modern life’s in-between moments with “Intermission,” a new campaign film directed by filmmaker Dylan Hayes.
The campaign is anchored by its location: a beautiful, minimalist London apartment that feels like the film’s second protagonist, echoing the brand’s ethos of spare yet considered, quietly masculine elegance. The film unfolds across a single shot, opening as the brand’s quintessential man on the move returns home to his sanctuary. But – like many of us in the post-covid age of hybrid work – he hasn’t fully left work. A long-winded voicemail from a coworker forms what could be said to be the film’s soundtrack, slowly unfolding as the protagonist tries to take in a moment of respite before he is called back into the office. The film comes full circle as he exits just the way he entered, minus the tailored raincoat.
Belying the simplicity of its narrative, the campaign manages to feel like a rich expression of the emerging menswear brand’s lifestyle vision. The Derrick man has exacting taste and is comfortable as his own companion, but is also ready to take the shifting expectations of contemporary urban life chicly in stride. From a visual and production perspective, the film is also a great example of how a few accessible concepts carefully executed can transform the mundane into the masterful.
The still images by photographer Mike Massey that accompany the film, meanwhile, offer another take on transitional moments. Taking a documentarian, street style-like approach, they follow their characters from point A to point B across London.
The film also represents the concept of an intermission in another way, as it stands in while the brand takes a break from the runway this season. While the film forms a dramatic change of pace and volume from a runway show, the richly realized narrative feels like more than enough to tide us over to next season. Following Derrick’s example, we’re enjoying the intermission.
