Document Journal Expands Into Beauty With ‘Notes on Beauty’ Debut
Document Journal is making its foray into the beauty space with the launch of Notes on Beauty, a biannual publication dedicated to exploring beauty as a reflection of identity, transformation, and cultural expression. Set to debut in New York on Valentine’s Day, with a wider release during Paris Fashion Week on February 25, the new title aims to push beyond traditional beauty narratives, positioning itself as a platform for both artistic and intellectual discourse.
The 400-page inaugural issue embraces a conceptual approach, blending essays, photography, and cultural criticism. Among the highlights is a cover designed by artist Francesco Vezzoli, along with features that span from a profile on biomedical scientist Augustinus Bader to an examination of ancient wellness traditions. A philosophical essay by Louvre scholar Donatien Grau delves into the evolving definition of beauty, describing it as an achievement of individuality. Adding a cinematic touch, a 40-page photo portfolio by Inez & Vinoodh captures 20 creatives from New York’s downtown scene, while Julianne Moore graces one of the covers in a striking portrait punctuated by scattered rose petals.
With contributions from a diverse mix of artists and writers—including Ocean Vuong, Lena Dunham, Charlotte Gainsbourg, and Michael Cunningham—the issue examines beauty as both an artistic medium and a personal statement. Beauty director Yadim shapes the editorial vision, while writer Natasha Stagg explores cultural attitudes toward beauty procedures and the idealization of youth.
The magazine’s launch has attracted significant industry interest, with advertisers including Hermès Beauty, Valentino Beauty, YSL Beauty, Prada Beauty, Frederic Malle, Dior Beauty, Loewe Parfums, Le Labo, and Louis Vuitton Fragrance securing placements in the debut issue. Priced at $25, the magazine is expected to reach a circulation of 44,000 with a projected readership of 132,000, spanning the U.S., Europe, and beyond.
Looking ahead, Notes on Beauty is set to expand beyond print, with plans for a dedicated digital platform and social presence. The publication also intends to develop events and collaborations that engage both luxury brands and emerging talent, reinforcing its position as a thought leader in beauty and culture.
