PROS
The time couldn’t be more right for a D&G relaunch as brands from the 90s/00s are being revamped as fashion continues to lean into nostalgia.
Cons
Learning the lessons of the past will mean a revival would require clear definition between the main and diffusion lines to avoid the cannibalisation of sales.

The Showstopper

If this was a soft launch for the comeback of D&G then all the ‘Cool Girls’ get excited. For those unfamiliar D&G was the little sister or diffusion line to the grown-up glamour of Dolce & Gabbana, enabling those who wanted to take their first steps into luxury fashion to do so without the hefty price tag. Launched in 1994 it was able to ride the supermodel wave through to the logomania period where their graphic logos became perfect fodder for replicating that model off-duty look. This may just be speculation, but if the brand doesn’t at least consider the potential of bringing the brand out from retirement (they shuttered it in 2011), then they will be missing a trick at a time when both fun and accessibility are being sought out by consumers navigating life in 2025. They will also be able to ride the wave of nostalgia fuelling fashion and reclaim their status among the contemporary luxury crowd who were left to seek out brands such as Phillip Plein to fill the vacuum when D&G closed.

Today, the fans were the focus for their fall 2025 presentation. As has become a common sight during Milan fashion week, the long strip outside the Metropol head office on Viale Piave turns into an untamed fan zone, with some camping out from the early hours just to spot their favourite K-pop artists, and of course to be a part of the action. Today, the brand finally recognised their presence – and social media value – by inviting them to the show, albeit via an outdoor extension of the internal runway and a live DJ set, meaning those lucky few got to watch the show in real-time IRL.

The collection itself was a break away from their love of worldy women who own their sexual prowess and had become rather limiting of late. So by knocking the age bracket down several notches and tailoring their collection to a younger demographic we got a jolt of energy which the brand had been missing, as those attaneding a Dolce and Gabbana show had come to expect the expected.

How the so-called ‘Cool Girl’ styles her clothes to go about her everyday was the way the brand made the collection appear “modern and fresh”, taking from the girl on the street outerwear was a keen focus with several variations of the slouch parka worn oversized (the parka is seeing something of a revival since it featured on the runways last season and all things Brit Pop will be trending when Oasis return to touring later this year), yet missing none of the Dolce and Gabbana glamour as they were paired with thigh-high boots and lace layers. The beanie hat accessories and baggy jeans were reminiscent of 90s hip-hop and the early origins of streetwear itself, before a rock-and-roll aesthetic of leopard print biker jackets and embellished leather followed. Not to completely swing the pendulum away from their core customer, the show culminated in a series of jewel-encrusted evening looks, which would still have Gen Z appeal for their ultra-mini lengths and cheeky transparency.

THE WRAP UP

In flipping the script and looking to how the ‘Cool Girls’ effortlessly style themselves Dolce and Gabbana have given us a season of something to talk about outside of their tried and tested glamorous muses. The oversized outerwear and lingerie-inspired separates, as well as the embellished denim speak to the way in which the next generation prefers not to buy into a top-to-toe look, but instead will style it their way, even if that means throwing on an oversized parka over an emerald green mesh mini dress, this is set to be the new D&G.
