Review of Dolce & Gabbana Fall 2023 Women’s Ad Campaign by Creative Director Fabien Baron and Photographer Steven Meisel with model Maya Jama
Dolce & Gabbana strips things down for a Fall 2023 women’s campaign that focuses on sensuality and the sensuality of material. The campaign was shot by photographer Steven Meisel with creative direction from Fabien Baron.
The campaign stars model and TV presenter Maya Jama, who this summer took over as the host of the UK’s salacious and endlessly popular reality dating show Love Island. Meisel’s campaign imagery offers a different perspective on the it-girl, however, nostalgically revisiting the iconography of his earliest campaigns for the house in the late 80’s. Done up with voluminous red curls, Jama exudes power glam as she poses in various positions that suggest not-so-subtle erotic acrobatics on a mid-mod chaise longue.
The accompanying video further emphasizes the va-va-voom factor through dramatic lighting and editing cuts, setting it to the sounds of Jack White’s phallic rock-and-roll fuzz guitar.
While there is an overt sense of bold sexuality, a simple focus on the collection itself comes to the fore as well, showing off the house’s lux use of leather, silk, and underwear as outerwear constructions. The last few seasons have seen a bit of a refocusing from Dolce & Gabbana on their core identity, and this campaign is a strong way to express that renewed commitment by the brand to being its most authentic and iconic self.
