Elie Saab Names Marina Raphael as Artistic Director of Handbags

Aiming for Six Collections a Year, the Appointment Reflects the Brand’s Ambition to Continue Expanding the Category

Elie Saab is expanding its handbag division, appointing Marina Raphael as the new artistic and design director for the category. Raphael, a Greek-Austrian designer and sixth-generation member of the Swarovski family, will maintain her role as creative director of her namesake label, which she founded in 2017.

“I have long admired Mr. Saab’s remarkable vision, his exceptional craftsmanship, and the meticulous attention to detail he brings to each creation. Our initial discussions about expanding the handbag category began last year, and this February in Paris, I was honored when Elie Jr. extended this extraordinary opportunity to me,” Raphael said. Her brand’s headquarters are based in Athens, and she will travel regularly to Paris to fulfill her new role, attending meetings, events, and Paris Fashion Week. Elie Saab showrooms are located in Paris, Milan, and Beirut.

In her position, Raphael will introduce six handbag collections per year: four ready-to-wear and two haute couture. Her debut collection for Elie Saab will be showcased at the brand’s haute couture show in Paris this January. She will collaborate closely with Elie Saab, founder and creative director of the label.

“Mr. Saab’s continued guidance will ensure that each piece remains true to the brand’s DNA while bringing a fresh perspective to the collection,” stated Elie Saab Jr., CEO of Elie Saab Group.

The Saab family is focusing on expanding the handbag category. “The accessories market — particularly the handbag sector — represents an ever-growing opportunity, and we are looking forward to establishing a stronger foothold within it. While handbags are already part of our product portfolio, we believe now is the optimal time to dedicate focused effort toward expanding this category and developing a distinct, recognizable identity that resonates with our customers,” Saab Jr. explained.

Elie Saab has committed substantial resources to develop the handbag sector, including financial and creative investments. The brand plans to increase its visibility by partnering with new retailers and promoting handbags through its flagship stores, runway shows, and major events. Saab Jr. expressed the brand’s aim to position its handbags as a significant part of its identity.

Raphael’s appointment aligns with the brand’s aesthetic, as both brands favor maximalism and bold materials such as crystals, leather, suede, feathers, and velvet. Their shared clientele includes prominent figures like Queen Maxima of the Netherlands, Jessica Alba, Megan Fox, Katie Holmes, and Jennifer Lopez.

“Marina’s expertise in the handbag sector was immediately evident, as she has proven her capability in building a successful handbag business. With an in-depth understanding of the Elie Saab brand and a unique skill in capturing and interpreting the Elie Saab aesthetic, she was a natural fit for this role,” Saab Jr. said.
