Femininity in its most directly embodied form was on designers’ minds this season, as the Fall 2024 runways were awash with looks that toed the lines between concealment and revelation, directly responding to and uncovering the feminine form.
The trend feels like a move beyond the ruffles and bows that characterized last year as what TikTok trendsetters dubbed “the year of the girl.” Instead, it matures these motifs through more classic and constructed categories or eschews clothing archetypes altogether to embrace the body itself directly.
“Naked dressing” looks directly point to the female form through transparency, using sheer fabrics to envelop the body, but not obscure it. Meanwhile, some designers, like Miu Miu, used cutouts to create a more contrasted sense of bodily presence and negative space.
The underwear-as-outerwear and corsetry trends continued to evolve as designers like Dilara Findikoglu and Ludovic de Saint Sernin reworked structural cues from lingerie. Dolce & Gabbana and Valentino also pushed that idea of classic high-femme sexuality with lots of black lace.
