Along With Its Annual Environmental Report, the Brand Announced a Book That Serves as a Guide to Starting a Responsible Fashion Business
Ganni has shared its Responsibility Report for 2023, detailing the brand’s investment in sustainability and social initiatives.
In 2023, Ganni experienced modest financial growth, a departure from the double-digit increases of previous years. Despite this, the company invested significantly in sustainability, achieving a 7% absolute reduction in carbon emissions from a 2021 baseline while averaging 18% annual growth from 2021-2023. This demonstrates Ganni’s capability to grow while reducing its carbon footprint.
A significant milestone for Ganni was phasing out virgin leather from its collections due to its substantial carbon footprint. This decision required reevaluating the company’s values and managing stakeholder expectations. Ganni successfully introduced best-selling products using next-generation materials, showing that their audience values creativity and sustainability over traditional luxury materials.
Ganni’s commitment to material innovation continued in 2023 through collaborations with seven “Fabrics of the Future” partners, aiming to integrate these innovations into their main collections. These efforts have inspired other major brands to adopt similar material innovations.
The living wage initiative is central to Ganni’s social commitments, with a goal for all contractual tier 1 suppliers to participate by 2025. Additionally, the company is advancing its supply chain transparency through digitalization.
Internally, Ganni established a “Carbon Squad” focused on reducing emissions across all departments, with senior management bonuses tied to achieving carbon targets. The company’s insetting initiatives, such as installing solar panels at four supplier locations, have shown positive results in their carbon audit, underscoring the impact of their renewable energy efforts.
Along with the release of the report, the brand also announced a new book by Ganni co-founder Nicolaj Reffstrup and writer Brooke Roberta-Islam. The Ganni Playbook: How to Get Started Creating a Responsible Business published by Penguin Random House UK, is a hands-on guide to managing a more responsible brand within today’s fashion landscape – driven by a mission to demonstrate the principles of a responsible business, where greater purpose co-exists with financial ambition.
