Review of Giorgio Armani Fall 2023 Ad Campaign by Photographer Paolo Roversi with models Grace Elizabeth, Lina Zhang, Malika Louback, and Louis Garrel
Giorgio Armani explores texture and light with a Fall 2023 campaign courtesy of iconic fashion photographer Paolo Roversi, who worked in collaboration with his son, fellow photographer and videographer Francesco Roversi.
Roversi brings his signature technique of painting with natural light and shadow to draw out rich, diaphanous compositions that feel suggestive of their subjects’ inner life. These subjects are captured before backdrops that seem painted with watercolors, further pushing the sense of artistry and elusiveness.
(As a side note, it’s kind of funny that the women’s and men’s portions of the campaign are so obviously split up into pink and blue, a dated dichotomy that these days tends to make us think of gender-reveal parties gone wrong. Then again, Giorgio Armani isn’t really the one for gender experimentation, and neither are its customers, so maybe the binary move makes perfect sense.)
The accompanying video makes the smart choice on focusing in on the materiality of the collection. Fluid silks, glass embellishments that dance in the light, supple leather, and beautifully milled wool become the main characters, expressing the house’s masterful command of high luxury.
Roversi has an unmistakable style, so any campaign that calls on his skills tends to strike us first as a work from Roversi, and then as whatever brand he is shooting for. Yet his style feels complementary to Giorgio Armani, and here the idea of an artist depicting a designer, rather than a designer hiring a photographer, works with the designer’s spirit of Italian artisanality – especially for this collection, which evinces a delicate consideration of depth and light.
