Review of Givenchy Spring 2021 Ad Campaign by Creative Director Matthew M. Williams & Photographer Heji Shin with Talent Kendall Jenner, Bella Hadid, Playboi Carti, Anok Yai & Liam Powers
Matthew M. Williams brings in an all-star cast for his first ad campaign at Givenchy. The recently appointed creative director works with photographer Heji Shin to create a slick and colorful set of images that abounds with personality.
The imagery references the pop simplicity of 90’s-era fashion editorials while incorporating the individuality of each model – Shin chose each color specifically to accentuate each subject’s personality and mood. The harmony or contrast provided by these backdrops sets off the character of both these people and the pieces they wear beautifully.
Each star worked with stylist Lotta Volkova to create looks that reflect their personality. Anok Yai serves up deadly grace in crinkly leather against an acid-green background. Playboi Carti’s edgy-yet-refined glam is elevated to contemplative heights before a field of marshmallow white. We see two sides of Kendall Jenner in chunky-trench-coat green and form-fitting russet.
The images form an excellent debut campaign for new creative director Matthew M. Williams. They attest to both confidences in his designs’ strength and humility that recognizes the importance of working within a creative team and celebrating the strength of others’ personalities.
Plus we just love the colors.
