Givenchy explores the synthesis of Parisian elegance and American cool at the heart of creative director Matthew M. Williams’ work for the house with a new Spring 2023 campaign by photographer Heji Shin.
The pastel palettes and gradient backgrounds lend Shin’s photographs a nostalgic yet fresh feel, while the black-and-white portraits further tap into the historic Parisian house’s legacy of elegance. This mood subtly amplifies the spirit of the collection, the details of which come to the fore of each image.
Heji is an amazing artist with a unique, inspired visual language that she has entrusted us to transpose to fashion.

The season sees Williams continue to evolve the ongoing dialogue between his design origins in streetwear and hip-hop scenes with his inheriting the aforementioned heritage of a French luxury house. A metallic tweed jacket is paired with distressed jeans; crystal-encrusted earrings illuminate a casual big hoodie look. On the men’s side of things, the presence of its star talent, Jamaican dancehall artist Alkaline, further pushes the international and contemporary scope of the campaign, embodying Givnechy’s rediscovered spirit of collaboration and exchange.
The cultural references change across the images, but their spirit and vision remains clear. Still relatively new in his position at the house, Matthew M. Williams’ design direction and brand identity for the brand become stronger with each outing, and in this campaign – coupled with the recent men’s show – he seems to be really hitting his stride.
