The creative director behind Y/Project’s experimental success leaves amid industry uncertainty
Glenn Martens, who has been with Y/Project for over a decade and served as creative director since 2013, is stepping down from his role at the avant-garde fashion house. The brand, known for its experimental and boundary-pushing designs, issued a brief statement expressing gratitude for Martens’ “unique contribution” but did not disclose details about a potential successor or future projects.
Martens played a pivotal role in shaping Y/Project’s identity, leading the brand to critical acclaim and commercial success during his tenure. His departure, though expected by some, will undoubtedly make waves in the fashion industry.
Since 2020, Martens has also served as the creative director for Diesel, limiting his ability to focus on Y/Project. The brand’s last show, scheduled for Paris Fashion Week in February 2024, was abruptly canceled, leaving his final collection from October 2023 as his parting statement. That show featured innovative designs and materials, leaving a lasting impression on the industry.
Martens’ exit follows the recent death of Y/Project co-founder Gilles Elalouf, who helped establish the brand alongside Yohan Serfaty. Martens acknowledged Elalouf’s support in allowing him the creative freedom to shape the brand’s artistic legacy.
Martens originally joined Y/Project shortly after its founding, serving as Serfaty’s assistant before taking over as creative director in 2013. Over the years, he expanded the label from menswear to include women’s ready-to-wear and accessories, with his bold designs earning him the Andam prize in 2017 and 2020.
With Martens’ departure and the loss of its last founder, Y/Project faces an uncertain future, particularly in light of financial challenges reported in recent years.
