As if we needed any more reasons to want to be a kid again, Gucci has just given us a big one.
The iconic brand recruited artist and illustrator Yuko Higuchi to bring their recent “For the Kids” collection to life. Featuring fantastical elements and anthropomorphic animals, most often cats, Higuchi’s work is whimsical and enchanting, yet surprisingly complex. While her work is clearly geared toward children, it never feels condescending or simplistic; she confidently understand that children can have meaningful experiences with art, and even that they have a need for it. It is no wonder she is wildly popular in her home country of Japan, and renowned around the world.
Her custom designs appear across a wide range of pieces that make up the “For the Kids” collection, from sweaters to dresses and bags to shoes. There is even a silk jumpsuit (ou là là!) and an adorable fanny pack. Up until now, one often may have wondered – is there really a reason that kids would need to wear Gucci? This collection answers with a resounding yes.
Being released in tandem with the collection is a beautiful book that collects Higuchi’s artwork, as well as reimaginings of her designs as games, coloring pages, mazes, and more.
Gucci has treated us to some pretty exciting collaborations before, but this one feels special. The wonderful power of imagination that characterizes Higuchi’s art speaks for itself, but Alessandro Michele’s move to celebrate it so lovingly as part of a collection and campaign is bold and brilliant. The project is totally unique, yet fits nicely into the always imaginative Gucci ethos we have come to know and love. Above all, it reminds us that art is play, and encourages us to keep playing.
