THE THEME
Rio Uribe is celebrating 10 years of his Gypsy Sport label, a brand that has long championed diversity and an unapologetically fierce sense of gender-queer expression. After a couple of seasons showing in Los Angeles, Uribe returned to the New York calendar for his 10th-anniversary show, with a model tribe that included Drag Race star Kandy Muse and actress Dominique Jackson. Models vogued down the runway in American flag dresses, sports jersey tops, disco-ready paillette dresses, and tons of fringe upon feathers.

THE SHOWSTOPPER

Look # 38
The finale look worn by Dominique Jackson was a twisted play on classic Americana with layers of feathers, nets, and fringe in red, white, and blue that underscored Gypsy Sport’s place in American fashion as a brand founded by a queer designer with a Mexican background.

The show took place on Governor’s Island, which meant guests had to take a ferry across water from Lower Manhattan to reach the destination: a leafy, tropical restaurant called Gitano Island. Unfortunately, a storm passed through the city and torrential rainfall (with no umbrellas provided) led to many guests taking the boat back to New York.

THE QUOTE

The 10-year anniversary is awesome for us but it’s such a community-focused brand that I felt like we wanted to celebrate with the people that we started with.

THE WRAP UP

The decade-long milestone allowed Uribe to look back at some of his past collections and reintroduce things he’s shown before — the jersey-number looks, the pink floral cape dress, the “I Heart NY” top — and the context of a celebration (he added more sequins this season to underscore the party mood as well as a new handbag introduced for the first time). Uribe says he’s not looking too much into the next 10 years and is instead staying optimistic and focused on the artisanal, DIY craft of his brand.
