Junya Watanabe: The Reinvention of Patchworks and Denim
Junya Watanabe wowed audiences with his spring menswear collection, proving that patchwork and denim are far from exhausted in his brand. Embracing the versatility of black, blue, and white denim, the designer showcased options suitable for various occasions, from heavy metal concerts to black-tie galas or even prom night.
Watanabe laid out a red carpet on the runway, introducing his exploration of the alternative tuxedo. Classic wing-tip shirts and bowties served as a base, enhanced by inventive patchworks of sequins, leather, and embroideries on the jackets, lending a touch of funk to the traditional attire.
While Watanabe’s previous patchworks may have evoked a rugged aesthetic, this collection exuded elegance reminiscent of Town & Country, albeit worn effortlessly by swaggering models channeling ’80s glam rock vibes. Shaggy hair, narrow sunglasses, flaring pants, and Tricker dress shoes created a unique sartorial harmony.
Experimentation remained a key theme, seen in jean-jacket parts merged with woolen capes or black jersey cardigans and vintage concert T-shirts spliced with scarves featuring prints by Cactus Plant Flea Market.
Amidst the avant-garde creations, Watanabe also presented a range of impeccably tailored jackets, pants, and white dress shirts adorned with black bibs, origami folds, and patchwork of fancy fabrics, offering a diverse selection of looks.
