THE THEME
Far from an emerging name, Juun.J’s creative aesthetic is still one of wanting to provoke and defy convention. And with over 20 years on the scene the South Korean designer still finds ways to be unpredictable.
Titled ‘Eccentric’, the collection saw a revision of grunge, like many designers before him have explored, but Juun.J’s particular handle on it was to create draped shapes which were actually fixed into place, creating a permanent design detail. The ubiquitous plaid checks of the trend were also spliced with denim with a yellow acid-washed effect reminiscent of the era.
Flirting between fine tailoring and a modern manifestation of casual, which often included some inventive ways with denim, todays show took the fabrics up a notch as leather and velvet contrasted against the stark parking garage, rendered in looks which did justice to the shows theme. Shoulders were sharp and stood away from the body through structured padding, while layering techniques of long over long created almost dress-like forms for both the male and female models.
With a palette set deliberately to the dark side of the spectrum, employing multiple textures was always going to be a requirement, and for fall there were shaggy furs, slick leathers, tie-dyed jersey, velvet, and the unexpected addition of sequin embellishment, which was part of the designers plan to create “exaggerated contrasts”, according to the show notes.

THE WRAP UP
For Juun.J’s namesake brand, fall continued to move it beyond the boundaries of gender norms and fabric choices dictated by occasion. Looking to transcend the limits of what could be possible, it was a strange contrast to feature a finale of identical looks for both the male and female models, as seeing the collection together would have allowed for its cohesion to have been solidified.
