Maison Margiela opens a new boutique in the heart of Venice, located in the iconic Piazza San Marco
Maison Margiela has officially expanded its retail presence with the opening of its first boutique in the storied city of Venice. Nestled in the iconic Piazza San Marco, the new store is not just a shopping destination but a symbol of the brand’s commitment to blending historical elegance with modern design sensibilities.
Covering a space of 539 square feet, the boutique is a reflection of Creative Director John Galliano’s artistic vision for Maison Margiela. The store showcases a diverse range of the brand’s offerings, including accessories, small leather goods, an array of shoes, fragrances, and a handpicked selection of the ready-to-wear collection. The boutique stands out not just for its product range but also for its meticulous design that pays tribute to the rich cultural heritage of Venice.
The store’s facade, a significant element of its design, has been carefully refurbished to maintain its historical integrity. The restoration process included the refurbishment of existing painted glass windows, while new door and window frames made of coated dark brass add a contemporary edge to the classic structure.
Inside, the boutique is a testament to Venetian artisanship. The flooring, a standout feature, is made of traditional Venetian terrazzo crafted on-site. This flooring style, which dates back centuries, is composed of marble granules bound together by a compound based on pebble lime or cement. This method, known for its use of small pieces of broken pottery, colored glass, and tiles, results in a unique, polished surface that adds to the store’s allure.
The interior design is complemented by bespoke furniture pieces, including a ready-to-wear corner and units for small leather goods, all made of travertine marble filled with white epoxy. This is further accentuated by a full mirrored wall, amplifying the boutique’s spacious feel. The store also features vintage armchairs by Corrado Corradi dell’Acqua and custom sofas reinterpreted in Vacchetta leather and fabric, creating a luxurious and inviting ambiance.
In addition to its stunning design and product offerings, the boutique is also home to several exclusive and numbered products. These include a limited-edition Maison Margiela by Venini glass made in Murano, showcasing the brand’s dedication to local craftsmanship and artistry. Additionally, a series of white busts made of gypsum mineral, adorned with Merletti lace from Burano, adds a unique touch to the boutique’s product lineup.
This new opening in Venice is part of Maison Margiela’s ongoing global expansion strategy. The brand, which now boasts over 120 stores worldwide, has been steadily increasing its retail footprint with recent openings in major cities like Honolulu, Dallas, and Los Angeles. The Shanghai store, which is the largest Maison Margiela store, exemplifies the brand’s commitment to expanding its reach and influence in the global fashion industry.
Owned and operated by parent company OTB, Maison Margiela has experienced significant growth, with revenues rising 24 percent last year. The brand, under Galliano’s creative direction since 2014, continues to push boundaries and redefine luxury fashion. The new Venice boutique, with its prime location and distinctive design, is poised to become a key destination for luxury shoppers and fashion enthusiasts visiting the city.
