Maria Grazia Chiuri Collaborates Angelin Preljocaj For The ‘Nuit Romaine,’ Film Staged At Palazzo Farnese
To celebrate International Dance Day, “Nuit Romaine,” or “Roman Night,” directed by Angelin Preljocaj and set at Palazzo Farnese in 16th-century Rome, follows the story of the goddess of the night, Nox, who comes to the Palazzo Farnese, bringing darkness and mystery into this place of power. Mesmerizing costumes by Maria Grazia Chiuri extend the dancers’ movements, with the site’s sculptures seemingly coming to life to interpret stories of love and passion. The film will be released on the couture brand’s YouTube channel and social media.
For “Nuit Romaine”, Chiuri collaborated with Eleonora Abbagnato, ballet director of the Teatro dell’Opera di Roma and luminary of the Opéra national de Paris. The costumes are hand-worked and full of refined detail; looking closely, you’ll see divine draping and pleating, luxurious lace inlays, charming cascading pearls, and ravenous rich colors. Some costumes presented a challenge as they had to read like armor while allowing the dancers to perform with freedom. Other costumes incorporate hand-painted techniques in the style of trompe-l’oeil—the Performance premieres on April 29 at 9:00 AM est.
