New York Top 10 Fall 2020 Shows

As Ranked by The Impression

There is an old saying “there’s nothing new under the sun”, which was adapted from the Book of Ecclesiastes and originally used by the author to complain about the monotony of life. However when existing elements are shifted and rearranged in novel ways, they can create something that feels fresh and new. The best of the New York Fall 2020 Fashion Shows are proof of this concept as they have pulled inspiration from various decades and remixed them to fantastical effect, from the 70’s metallics and animal prints of Tom Ford to 50’s and 60’s-inspired A-line jackets and evening gloves of Marc Jacobs. Interestingly, even designers who took inspiration from the same decade had wildly different results; for instance, Coach‘s Stuart Vevers and R13’s Chris Leba both showed collections inspired by the early 1980’s…but the former embraced primary colors, Memphis-like patterns and pastels, while the latter favored black leather, combat boots and denim. Taking inspiration from the past isn’t simply nostalgia, it’s also a more sustainable way to think about fashion as many ecologically-minded celebrities are starting to re-wear their favorite items from past seasons, combining them with fresh pieces from the latest runway collections.
