Review of Paul Andrew Fall 2023 Ad Campaign by Photographer Alessio Bolzoni with models Veronika Kunz and Benjamin Sherrell
Latex and leather: the latest campaign from Paul Andrew is a psychosexually charged exploration of indulgence and restraint. The fall 2023 campaign was shot by photographer Alessio Bolzoni.
Taking his cue from the muscular curves and sensual material palette of the collection, Bolzoni creates a tense interior world of desire and connection. While there’s no actual bondage gear or full nudity present (imagination and anticipation are sexier than reality), the photographer’s oblique and layered compositions coupled with the styling’s excellent use of latex and leather develop a complex relational narrative between its two subjects, who both personify and defy archetypes of masculine and feminine sexuality.
With this new campaign I have collaborated with Alessio Bolzoni, whom I met on-set in 2020 whilst making a short film with Luca Guadagnino for Ferragamo. Alessio has photographed most of Luca’s movie posters, as well as many important fashion campaigns, and his work has a powerful cinematic quality. He also has a unique skill and sensitivity for capturing movement and light on camera, all of which were important for me with this campaign. This campaign is important for me as it is the first time in which I give the Paul Andrew woman a face. The campaign stars Swiss model and painter, Veronika Kunz, who epitomizes female sophistication with a truly modern and artistic edge.
– Paul Andrew
It’s impressive that Andrew has been able to share such great campaigns already featuring only the shoes themselves and sometimes the feet they appear on, but this introduction of fully embodied people takes us far deeper into the brand’s creative world, fleshing out a narrative of elegant indulgence.
This campaign also marks the first time in which a Paul Andrew campaign will be printed and showcased on poster boards all over New York City throughout the month of September, framing the designer’s return to the NYFW calendar, where he will be showcasing his new collection at the iconic Rockefeller Center.
While there will already be plenty to see during fashion week, such a decisive and evocative campaign is sure to cut through the noise and turn plenty of heads. Paul Andrew impresses us with every campaign the brand puts out, but this one is probably the most powerful yet.
