Selfridges Secures Approval for Private Members’ Club at London Flagship

The new exclusive space will offer terrace and private dining as the retailer looks to deepen engagement with customers

Selfridges has received approval to open a private members’ club at its London flagship, as part of a broader plan to create a new high-end shopping and social destination. The space will include a terrace and private dining room, and is expected to launch in the spring.

Approved by Westminster City Council, the plan allows Selfridges to convert former staff offices into a members’ club or retail space, with permission to operate the venue for up to 50 years. The move comes amid a rise in private clubs across London, as more affluent residents look for spaces that offer both privacy and flexibility. For retailers and property owners, these kinds of projects offer a way to make better use of existing space while catering to evolving customer habits and expectations.

Selfridges, owned by Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund and Thailand’s Central Group, joins a growing number of luxury retailers expanding beyond traditional retail. The new space will sit in the SWOD building, a 1930s addition to the flagship, and nods to the store’s history of innovation—from its founding in 1909 to the revival of its rooftop gardens in 2009 for exclusive pop-up events.

As consumer spending patterns continue to evolve, Selfridges is betting on more intimate, experience-driven spaces to stay relevant. The new club is designed to foster long-term loyalty by offering its core customers a setting that feels both private and personal.
