With the release of its seventh issue of its biannual magazine, global technology platform SSENSE broadens its editorial vision. Chlo Sevigny, an actress who is entering her third decade as a cultural icon, is the subject of an exclusive interview for the cover story.
In an interview with Thora Siemsen and using images by Brianna Capozzi, Chlo Sevigny outlines her goals for the future, including directing a feature film. She divulges some personal information about her collaborations with directors like David Fincher and Harmony Korine:
“The first day we did hundreds of takes,” Sevigny says. “I was crying in the hotel room, calling a friend who had directed me before, like, ‘Am I a terrible actress? What’s going on? Am I going to get fired?’ My phone rang in the hotel room and David called me and was like, ‘This is my process. I thought you did great today. I’m so happy you’re here.’ I gave over to his process.”
The topic of “The Remix” is explored in this issue. A remix can change the context and blur the boundaries of form by fusing different mediums and practices or by fusing the past and present. The artists featured in the issue produce boundary-pushing art.
As the issue’s theme suggests, there is room for experimentation, according to Ross Scarano, interim managing editor of SSENSE:
“This is the remix issue of SSENSE. We’re a few years into making this magazine, and we’ve decided to try on some new things, muss it up a bit. With a remixed song, the bones of something that already exists contributes to the creation of something new. The cover star Chloë Sevigny is an icon of cool for many reasons, but I think her work as an actress is the most understated, perhaps because she’s able to disappear into her roles, despite her singular public persona. With that in mind, our cover story puts the focus on her career in film and TV, and the creative relationships she’s had with many of cinema’s great contemporary auteurs. The way she talks about working with, say, David Fincher or Werner Herzog reinforces how one-of-a-kind and real she is.”
In October, the magazine will be made exclusively available to members of the SSENSE community. Distribution will target a broad range of clients, associates, and friends who serve as their most enthusiastic audience.
