Stone Island opens its Stockholm flagship featuring the new global retail concept by OMA/AMO

Stone Island opens its new flagship in Stockholm, championing the brand’s core values in research, innovation and community. The 90m2 store follows the new global retail concept designed in partnership with OMA/AMO, using materials and processes that reflect Stone Island’s legacy of development and experimentation.

Located to the west of Norrmalmstorg Square, the store façade features large windows looking into the store’s interior space which establish a relationship between the store’s interior and the city outside. Immediately visible and iconic of the new global store concept is the Chandelier, a floor-mounted visual display module, able to rotate on itself to become a digital monitor or to unfold and turn into a display showcase.

Upon entering, the visitor encounters a stainless-steel wall and a backlit dark acid-etched green display turning to the right. The sand-sprayed corrugated metal-clad changing room is a freestanding object in the space while an industrial metal niche with a red resin floor exhibits Stone Island pieces.

Lends the store’s technical appearance the perforated metal sheet ceiling finish, complementing with the cement-coloured floor’s resin. The store features the full Stone Island offering, including the seasonal collections as well as Ghost, Marina and Stellina ranges.

Materiality is crucial to the design concept, which has been led by Samir Bantal of OMA/AMO. Cork is the key element of the new global store concept, which has been burned, sand-blasted and coated. The resulting dark, structured cork has functional properties, both absorbing sound and working against humidity. Shredded recycled paper and resins are compressed under high pressure to create furnishings that seem like concrete. Manually sandblasted corrugated metal panels are applied with sand and resins for textured effects.
