The Independents Group Acquires Design Studio, 2×4

Acquisition brings New York and Beijing-based design firm into global communications group’s portfolio

The Independents, an international communications group focused on the luxury, fashion, and lifestyle sectors, has acquired 2×4, a design studio based in New York and Beijing. The move brings new design and brand strategy capabilities into The Independents’ portfolio of specialist agencies.

Founded in 1994 by Michael Rock, Susan Sellers, and Georgianna Stout, 2×4 has developed a practice centered on the idea that design is a central organizing principle of contemporary life. Over the past 30 years, the studio has worked across sectors including culture, fashion, technology, business, and the arts, delivering brand strategy, design, and activation services.

2×4 has worked with luxury brands such as Prada, Miu Miu, Chanel Arts and Culture, and Ginori 1735. The studio’s broader client list includes Apple, Google, Instagram, YouTube, JPMorganChase, Hyundai, Target, and MillerKnoll, as well as cultural institutions including the Museum of Modern Art, Fondazione Prada, LACMA, Triennale di Milano, Lincoln Center, and Fubon Art Museum. The studio also maintains long-term collaborations with architecture firms including the Office for Metropolitan Architecture, Foster + Partners, and Diller Scofidio + Renfro.

“We are excited to welcome the 2×4 team to The Independents. Their depth of knowledge and experience in brand strategy and design gained working with some of the most creative partners anywhere, will be an immeasurable asset to our collective. A deep understanding of brand dynamics undergirds every communication project so we anticipate they will assume a critical role in our constellation of businesses. And their wide experience working beyond luxury and lifestyle expands the range of our practice. We’re thrilled to have them on board,” said Isabelle Chouvet, CEO of The Independents.

The acquisition is expected to enhance the Group’s capabilities in brand storytelling and strategic design, while giving 2×4 access to The Independents’ global network and client base. According to the companies, the move will enable more cross-cultural collaborations across industries.
