Tom Ford Beauty Taps Tilda Swinton for Black Orchid Reserve Campaign

Tilda Swinton fronts Tom Ford’s latest campaign as the brand unveils a new fragrance under creative director Haider Ackermann

Tom Ford Beauty has announced Oscar-winning actress Tilda Swinton as the face of its new Black Orchid Reserve campaign. The fragrance launch follows the brand’s recent campaign featuring Angelina Jolie, as Tom Ford Beauty continues to collaborate with high-profile celebrities. The company is currently owned by The Estée Lauder Cos.

The campaign was designed by Tom Ford creative director Haider Ackermann and photographed by Inez and Vinoodh. Campaign visuals and video portray Swinton moving fluidly, reflecting the themes of the fragrance.

Swinton described the fragrance and the campaign in a statement: “Transformation, the blurring of boundaries and the celebration of magical properties have always drawn me close: Black Orchid Reserve is precisely such an enchantment, rare and uncompromising in its vision. To be part of this chapter for this estimable house, for which I have always held the deepest admiration, with the inauguration of my beloved Haider Ackermann as creative director, is a matter of pure joy and the heartfelt celebration of long friendship and the eternal grace of love.”

Creative director Haider Ackermann, who took on the role last year, commented on the campaign, saying: “Tilda Swinton does not belong to one moment or one era. Her beauty is rare, her elegance enduring, her presence felt even in silence. She embodies the mysterious essence of Black Orchid Reserve.”

First introduced in 2006, Black Orchid was Tom Ford’s debut fragrance. The new Black Orchid Reserve iteration includes the Ghost Orchid, a flower with white floral notes that contrasts with the original scent’s rich, dark accords and spices.

Guillaume Jesel, president and chief executive officer of Tom Ford, stated: “Black Orchid Reserve marks a bold new chapter for Tom Ford’s first and top-selling women’s fragrance franchise. With her extraordinary artistry and cultural influence, Tilda Swinton perfectly embodies the iconic mystery of this fragrance, positioning it at the pinnacle of luxury beauty.”

According to the Estée Lauder Cos., fragrance was the company’s only product category to report growth in the fourth quarter, with a 2 percent increase. For the quarter ending June 30, the beauty group, which also owns Clinique, MAC, and Bobbi Brown, reported a 12 percent drop in net sales to $3.4 billion. The company attributed second-half share gains in China in part to Tom Ford, but noted that overall fragrance sales declined for Tom Ford due to retail softness in North America.
