'Dreamatic' Fall 2020 Men's Fashion Ad Campaign

A new campaign from Valentino discovers a unique digital dreamscape.

For the Fall 2020 menswear campaign Valentino recruited YH Fong, a film director and digital artist dually based in London and Hong Kong. The collection is characterized by woodblock-like prints and patterns which fuse architectural, landscape, and fantastical elements. Fong uses digital editing to bring these elements to life in a short film. The prints are blown up into the background, so that the clothing blends seamlessly into the landscape. As forms and figures are repeated and rearranged, a curious aesthetic develops which seems to encompass both juxtaposition and harmony.

It is this intoxicating dualism from which the campaign draws its strength. Despite all its oppositions, of grayscale and color, past and future, analogue and digital, there is still a unity, the kind of sameness we attribute to a pattern. Fong’s technical alchemy in creating this dreamscape is thoroughly impressive, and we are grateful to Valentino for bringing this dream to life.
