Filmed at Valentino’s headquarters in Rome, the Pre-Fall 2020 campaign relies on the colorful strength of creative director Pierpaolo Piccioli’s designs to make its visual impact. The minimalist appointments of the maison’s interior form a simple backdrop against which the rich fuchsias and sherbet oranges of Piccioli’s dresses bloom. Accessories in deep scarlet add a florid edge.
The accompanying short film blends colorful shots of the Roman cityscape into the mix. A slinking soundtrack, reminiscent of Federico Fellini films and the golden age of Italian cinema, lends a lively and romantic swoon. It feels like a love letter to the creative scene in Rome, the brand’s cherished home which is beginning to heal.
Piccioli is a master at arranging form and color, kaleidoscopically unveiling new ways of experiencing color with each new work. By simply turning the camera on his creative space, he has found new depth to this process and new joy to share with the world. Color us impressed.
