Versace guides its iconic tailoring into a bold new era with the new Fall 2023 campaign by creative director Christopher Simmonds and photographer duo Mert Alas & Marcus Piggott.
The full launch of the campaign forms the posts shared to the brand’s Instagram account after it was completely wiped clean last week. The move closely follows Tapestry Inc.’s acquisition of the brand and coincides with the arrival of its Fall 2023 collection in stores around the world, marking a celebration of the brand’s next chapter.
Mert & Marcus deploy a razor-sharp simplicity in capturing the campaign imagery; their models are situated in group compositions before an empty studio backdrop and shot in crisp black and white. The approach has the powerful effect of bringing Versace’s iconic tailoring to the fore, emphasizing the suiting’s powerful shoulders and angular structure. It also pushes the effect of the metallic hardware detailing, and increases the impact of Lucia Pieroni’s dramatic makeup looks.
Accompanying the still portraiture is a short video that juxtaposes moving versions black-and-white studio imagery with rapid and energetic shots of the brand’s home city of Milan, creating a heady ode to the brand’s role in defining Italy’s fashion capital.
All of this campaign imagery is cleverly overlaid with the iconic Versace logo in pink, perhaps a subtle nod to the brand’s historic groundwork for the cresting Barbiecore trend that also forms a chic pop of contrast with the crisp black-and-white photography.
As the campaign potently demonstrates, Gianni Versace’s radical take on tailoring is still just as powerful now as it was in the early 80s. It’s a smart move to pay homage to the brand’s design foundations as it moves into its next chapter, celebrating the best parts of Versace as it boldly blazes ahead.
