The Designer Reflected on His Burgeoning Success and Socially Conscious Approach to Fashion
Last night at The New School’s Parsons School of Design, designer Willy Chavarria joined forces with Parsons Board Member Julie Gilhart for a compelling discussion that delved into Chavarria’s innovative and socially-conscious approach to fashion.
During the event, Chavarria provided a detailed look at his creative journey, emphasizing his unique reinterpretation of workwear. His approach blends art and activism with commercial viability, redefining traditional concepts of luxury and altering the fashion landscape. This shift towards a new luxury paradigm reflects broader changes within the industry, where societal impact and artistic expression converge.
The talk at Parsons is part of the school’s ongoing effort to host critical conversations that challenge traditional boundaries in design and creativity. These discussions aim to spotlight influential voices that are shaping the future of fashion. In recognition of his contributions to the field, Parsons will honor Chavarria at the upcoming 76th annual Parsons Benefit scheduled for May 20, 2025.
Reflecting on the influence that earlier industry figures had on him, Chavarria said, “I remember going to hear Willi Smith speak when I was a student and it stayed with me for years. I’m honored to be in a position to share my own growth with the Parsons community and the future leaders of our industry. It’s a dream.”
Julie Gilhart praised Chavarria’s impactful work, remarking, “Willy Chavarria is an extraordinary talent that is forging new pathways, breaking down borders, opening closed doors, and making us feel more human about fashion in general. Probably one of the most courageous fashion designers of not just the current moment, but of our time.”
