Collegiate Sports Meet Korean Streetwear Cool
South Korean designer Woo Youngmi draws inspiration from the East-West push-pull exchange of ideas for her latest collection, focusing on the style of the “ABK,” or American-born Korean. This unique blend of collegiate prep, California surfer, and sporty styles has influenced Korean fashion significantly, and here she reincorporates this perspective she has helped to define.
In her newest collection, the designer combines references from vintage football uniforms and traditional East Asia cowboys, featuring high-waisted, short pants with knee folds, thigh padding, and lacing at the waist. The football-inspired aesthetic is showcased in sleeveless button downs with strong pointed shoulders, tied across the body in a bojagi-style bow.
Baseball jerseys and varsity jackets in the collection feature the brand’s scrawled WYM logo based on traditional calligraphy, adding a youthful flair to the mostly neutral color palette of beiges, blues, and blacks. The collection introduces pops of rust and red that blend harmoniously on sleek knit dresses and other pieces.
Referencing the Korean countryside, Woo includes lush landscape tapestries transformed into coats, jackets, and shorts for men, as well as skirt suits for women. Handcrafted crochet details adorn singlets and shorts, layered over button downs and trousers for added texture.
