Zara Commissions Es Devlin for Immersive “50 Songs of the Sea” Installation in Spain

As part of its 50th anniversary celebrations, Zara has unveiled a site-specific installation by renowned British artist Es Devlin at the newly restored Cúpula Atlántica in A Coruña, Spain

Titled 50 Songs of the Sea, the work transforms the 28-meter-wide dome into a revolving poetic observatory. Inside, three concentric rings of seats rotate slowly, encouraging viewers to orbit one another. Outside, a circular LED strip will broadcast 50 sea poems, a lyrical gesture to the Atlantic Ocean that surrounds the site.

The installation marks Devlin’s first visit to A Coruña, which she recalls as “a place of fierce energy,” citing the November winds atop Monte San Pedro as the moment she knew the location was right. Her research revealed the unique qualities of the site: Spain’s only 360-degree covered observatory, and nearby, the Tower of Hercules, the world’s oldest functioning Roman lighthouse.

At the center of the piece is a planetary tribute to Zara’s global team. Projected within the dome are the names of more than 150,000 Inditex employees, whom Devlin calls “the true protagonists of the work.”

Known for her boundary-blurring creations across theatre, stadiums, and museums, Devlin brings her signature blend of architecture, language, and emotion to this commemorative commission. 50 Songs of the Sea echoes Zara’s beginnings — a nod, as Devlin puts it, to “a tiny promontory” of its first store in 1975 — and to the oceanic pull of the brand’s home in Galicia.
