Review of Marc Jacobs ‘Heaven’ Spring 2021 Ad Campaign by Photographer Harley Weir with models Brian Molko, Rex Orange County, Lily McMenamy, Georgia Palmer, & Kate Moss
Marc Jacobs gives us a colorful peek at the weird world of ‘Heaven’ in a new campaign for Spring 2021.
The brand’s Heaven collections tend to feature lots of collaboration and feel like a sort of surreal and youthful spin-off of the Marc Jacobs universe. Many of the pieces bear traces of that kawaii-punk aesthetic that the kids can’t seem to get enough of these days. The newest entry into this world gets a lo-fi campaign treatment from the contemporary photographic queen of imperfect beauty, Harley Weir.
Weir captures her eclectic cast – including Brian Molko of Placebo, Kate Moss, Rex Orange County, and more – in a series of character-filled portraits.
There is too much of a commitment to personality and individuality to really pin down a conceptual theme, but there are traces of a motif which could maybe be described as a deconstruction of symbolism: imagery of heaven and hell, and infancy, purity, and youth, gets reworked through its relationship with these uncategorizable characters.
Simple yet unique and visually impactful, the campaign is a focused statement of Marc Jacobs’ vision for Heaven.
