Spring 2027 Fashion Show Review

A Library of Possible Selves

Review of Valentino Spring 2027 Fashion Show

By Mackenzie Richard Zuckerman

THE IMPRESSION TAKE

Alessandro Michele’s Valentino Spring 2027 collection, titled Antibiblioteca, used the idea of unread books as a way to frame fashion as a library of possible selves. The review considers how Michele gave his Valentino a stronger intellectual and emotional clarity, while asking which of those many possibilities the house will ultimately turn into a recognizable wardrobe.

Valentino Spring 2027, titled Antibiblioteca, felt like Alessandro Michele’s clearest attempt yet to answer the question that has followed his tenure from the beginning: what is his Valentino becoming?

The premise gave him a particularly useful way in. Shown at the Bibliothèque Sainte-Geneviève in Paris, the collection drew from Nassim Nicholas Taleb’s idea of the antilibrary, itself inspired by Umberto Eco’s collection of unread books. The value sits in everything still waiting to be discovered: knowledge untouched, possibilities unexplored, lives that could still be lived. Guests were asked to bring books of their own, giving the concept a physical presence within the show rather than leaving it confined to the notes.

It also happens to suit Michele remarkably well. His fashion has always been populated by possible selves: identities tried on, histories layered together, characters assembled through clothes. At Valentino, that instinct has occasionally made it difficult to distinguish between the breadth of Michele’s imagination and the identity of the house itself. Antibiblioteca gave that multiplicity a clearer reason for being. Each look became another possible life waiting on the shelf.

That made Spring 2027 one of his more coherent propositions for Valentino so far. It also brought the larger challenge into sharper focus. Michele is becoming increasingly articulate about possibility. The next stage is deciding which possibilities Valentino should claim as its own.

THE VIBE

Glamour as Possibility, Unread Selves, & Edited Eccentricity

The collection moved between lean strapless dresses, lace camisoles, scalloped pencil skirts, satin bustiers, feathered and fringed skirts, belted jackets, oversized shoulders, sequined argyle, baseball caps, pleated trousers, and sweeping evening gowns. Michele’s eclecticism remained fully intact, though this season there was a stronger framework holding it together.

A green leather jacket against a sculptural fuchsia skirt, sequined argyle with relaxed trousers, or a baseball cap entering an evening look all made sense within the world of Antibiblioteca. They were different characters occupying the same library. The pleasure came from moving between them.

Still, the strongest looks were often the ones where Michele edited the idea down. The black opening dress, the yellow bustier with its lilac skirt, the mint gown interrupted by a black train, and the fuchsia strapless dress with pleated pink volume behind it all pointed toward a more convincing Valentino-Michele language. They carried glamour, eccentricity, and emotional charge with enough precision to let the silhouette lead.

That editing feels increasingly important. Valentino already gives Michele an extraordinary amount to work with: couture craft, saturated color, romance, surface, ceremony, and an established relationship with fantasy. His most convincing work at the house emerges when those qualities meet the specificity of his own eye without becoming submerged under the totality of his universe. Here, a sharper silhouette often provided the clarity.

The menswear helped too. Belted jackets, soft pleated trousers, satin tunics, and loosened tailoring gave Michele’s character-building a more grounded wardrobe proposition. The eccentricity remained, but the clothes carried an ease that made them immediately understandable. There was something useful in that balance, particularly for a house still working out how its new identity moves beyond the runway.

Color, as ever, was one of Michele’s great pleasures. Citron met lavender, green collided with fuchsia, purple sat against olive, and turquoise appeared amid multicolor shimmer. Valentino has always had permission to be dramatic with color. Michele is widening the emotional range of that drama far beyond the house’s historic red.

There was also a convincing proposition around glamour in daylight. Satin bustiers, lace, feathers, gloves, caps, and sunglasses pulled evening codes into more casual circumstances. That feels like fertile territory for Valentino. The house’s formal history remains visible while the attitude becomes easier, stranger, and more contemporary.

The challenge was hierarchy. Antibiblioteca celebrates possibility, and Michele clearly enjoys allowing different ideas equal room to exist. A fashion house eventually has to decide which of those ideas it wants to build upon. The body-skimming bustier and pencil-skirt silhouette could become one direction. Soft tailoring could become another. Contrast-train gowns already suggest a compelling red-carpet language. The baseball-cap glamour offers an immediately contemporary gesture. Spring 2027 presented all of them with generosity. A stronger sense of priority would make the larger proposition easier to recognize.

THE WRAP UP

Spring 2027 felt smarter and more coherent than several of Michele’s earlier Valentino collections because the concept clarified his method. The layering, collisions, shifts in character, and occasional sense of irresolution finally had a framework capable of holding them together. That is meaningful progress.

Michele has given Valentino an increasingly persuasive emotional and intellectual idea: clothes as unrealized lives, glamour as possibility, and the wardrobe as an archive of selves. The collection also confirmed that a compelling philosophy still needs a recognizable design system around it.

The strongest moments already point toward one. When Michele pares back the styling enough to let silhouette, color, and proportion do the work, Valentino comes into clearer focus. The romance sharpens. The eccentricity gains purpose. His voice and the house begin to sound more naturally intertwined.

Antibiblioteca gives Alessandro Michele’s Valentino a compelling way of thinking. The opportunity now is to turn that way of thinking into a wardrobe whose identity feels just as clear.
