Review of Alexander Wang Holiday Bodywear 2022 Ad Campaign by Photographer Todd Oldham with models Carmen Electra, Amanda Lepore, Trina, Amelia Gray Hamlin, and Mo Saffari
Alexander Wang continues with its strong return with a new Holiday 2022 campaign for its Bodywear collection, shot by photographer Todd Oldham.
The campaign follows in the pattern of previous chapters from the brand, like its first bodywear campaign and its recent holiday campaign, taking a minimal editorial portraiture approach but infusing it with a cheeky sense of fun. This time around, the campaign finds a quirky, multi-generational group of celebrities in front of the camera: Carmen Electra, Amanda Lepore, Trina, Amelia Gray Hamlin, and Mo Saffari.
Feeling almost like clever visual jokes or puns, Oldham’s portraits see these stars playfully interact with familiar holiday objects in unexpected ways. Electra poses with overexaggerated bombshell sexuality on a wrapped up present that could not more obviously be a motorcycle; Gray warms her hands before a fake TV fire; dressed as an elf, Saffari smashes presents with a hammer.
With this campaign, Alexander Wang wisely picks up on the visual theme of previous campaigns to quickly establish a brand identity and attitude following a disappearance from the public eye. It’s also nice to see a holiday campaign that uses the season as an opportunity for irony and humor, making light of what, for many – even if most fashion campaigns would have us believe otherwise – can be a difficult time.
