The Fashion Industry Mourns The Loss Of IMG Models’ Luminary, Ivan Bart, A Vanguard For Diversity And An Indomitable Force For Positive Change

Ivan Bart, the former president of IMG Models, known for reshaping the landscape of the modeling industry, has passed away at the age of 60.

Born and raised in Brooklyn in 1963, Bart’s journey into the modeling world was an unexpected twist in his career trajectory. Initially armed with a degree in psychology and a position in public relations, Bart swiftly learned the ropes of the modeling business. By 1994, he took the reins as the creative director of IMG Models, kickstarting the firm’s model division by signing luminaries like Niki Taylor and Tyra Banks.

IMG Models, under Bart’s visionary leadership, saw the ascent of many iconic faces in the industry – Kate Moss, Gisele Bündchen, Joan Smalls, and the Hadid sisters, to name just a few. Yet, it wasn’t just the superstar names that made Bart stand out; it was his relentless drive for inclusivity. He strived to shatter fashion’s archaic molds, ushering in an era where models of diverse sizes, races, genders, and ages graced the world’s most prestigious runways and magazine covers.

Ivan Bart’s dedication to promoting diversity was evident not just in his professional endeavors but in his conversations. In an insightful exchange with The Impression’s Editor-in-Chief, Kenneth Richard, Bart spoke passionately about his endeavors to lead changes from the forefront. From IMG’s championing of different sizes, marking a seismic shift in the fashion paradigm, to his advocacy for age inclusivity with the signing of icons like Maye Musk and Laura Hutton, Bart’s influence was omnipresent. His pride lay in IMG’s active role in diversifying the modeling spectrum, emphasizing that feeling good is an amalgamation of mind, body, and spirit.

In the realm of social media, Bart was a pioneer. Recognizing the transformative power of platforms like Twitter early on, he leveraged it not just for brand enhancement but to ensure models had a voice. In his own words, this was “the first generation of models that have their own voice and are interested in sharing their point of view rather than being used by brands to represent whatever the brands want. They are creating the conversation themselves.

Endeavor’s President and COO, Mark Shapiro, announced Bart’s passing in a letter to the company and echoed the sentiments of many when he recalled the charisma and energy that Bart brought to any room. From fashion shows in global capitals to intimate gatherings, Ivan’s presence was nothing short of “awe-inspiring.”

Shapiro’s heartfelt email to employees emphasized Bart’s pivotal role in advocating for a more inclusive industry. A memorable instance he highlighted was Bart’s earnest plea to Victoria’s Secret’s management to diversify their runway television special, reflecting the richness of real-world beauty.

Prominent figures in the fashion world, from Naomi Campbell to Ashley Graham, have come forward to share their sorrow and memories of Bart. Graham, especially, credits Bart as being an “integral part” of her success story, breaking barriers and making paths for many like her.

Bart’s departure leaves behind not just a void in the modeling world but a legacy of empowerment, inclusivity, and relentless passion. His endeavors to uplift, represent, and celebrate every form of beauty have left an indelible mark, ensuring his spirit will continue to inspire generations.

Ivan operated from a place of love, hope, and warmth. He was ready with a wink while operating subversively as a futurist who envisioned what society wanted before they knew it. We were lucky to have him as a leader who molded culture with grace. I’m grateful for him and know his inspiration will be with us for a long time to come.
