Like it or not, the Y2K craze still seems to have its claws in the fashion zeitgeist, and one of the effects or correlations of the trend we’ve seen across the Fall 2023 runways is a resurgence of the low waist. Diesel and Dsquared2 were of course some of the leaders in defining the low-slung denim look of the early and mid 2000s, so it’s no surprise the brands should be rocking the style on jeans in its return to the fashion forefront. Celine and Courrèges have taken a somewhat similar approach serving up looks that incorporate a whiff of mid-2000s off-duty supermodel style into their distinct brand identities.
But a low waist doesn’t necessarily have to connect to any previous style trend, as Bottega Veneta has shown by taking the look in a direction all its own.
Meanwhile, other houses have looked even further back in time, drawing inspiration from the dropped waists of 1920s flapper fashion and its connection to sexual liberation – a hundred-year-old statement whose relevance we can still detect in the work of Ann Demeulemeester, Miu Miu, and Dolce & Gabbana.
